MBZUAI is no longer an automatic full scholarship, and that is the most important thing to know before you apply. After reading the University’s own graduate admissions and funding pages directly, we confirmed that the funding model has been rebuilt around faculty advisors. Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence now states that M.Sc. students are “fee-paying by default”, that merit-based funding only “may be available”, and that funding is “not guaranteed for all admitted students”. Ph.D. students are centrally funded in their first year, but only while they are matched with a faculty advisor — and the funding continues beyond Year 1 only if that match is confirmed.
Pages across the web still describe MBZUAI as a guaranteed fully funded ride for every admitted student. That was the old model. The application portal opened on 7 September 2026 and the final deadline for most graduate programmes is 15 December 2026 at 5 p.m. GST.

Detail Description
MBZUAI is a graduate research university in Abu Dhabi dedicated entirely to artificial intelligence. Its Master of Science and doctoral programmes cover artificial intelligence with specialisations in computer vision, machine learning and natural language processing, alongside computer science, robotics, statistics and data science, and computational biology.
The thing that has changed, and that this page exists to explain, is how study there is paid for. MBZUAI describes its current model as “built on a partnership between the University and faculty advisors,” and states that funding, benefits and continued eligibility depend on your programme, your academic standing, and — for M.Sc. students — whether you have secured a faculty-sponsored assistantship or an approved government scholarship. Central University money now sits almost entirely with the Ph.D., and even there it is a bridge to advisor funding rather than a guarantee for the whole degree.
For an applicant, the practical consequence is that the strength of your research fit with a specific faculty member matters more than it used to, and matters more than it does at most universities. The advisor is not a formality after admission. The advisor is the funding.
The Three Funding Routes
Which programme you apply to decides whether funding is probable, possible or impossible. These are not variations on one scholarship.
| Route | Funding Status | How Funding Is Secured | Guarantee |
| Ph.D. programmes | Centrally funded in Year 1 while matching with a faculty advisor | A confirmed faculty advisor match by the end of Year 1. Funding moves to the advisor’s own funding no later than the start of Year 2 | Subject to a confirmed advisor match and satisfactory progress |
| M.Sc. programmes | Fee-paying by default; merit-based funding may be available | A faculty advisor-sponsored research or teaching assistantship, or an approved government scholarship for UAE nationals. Merit funding is considered during admissions review. Funding transfers to the advisor as soon as a match is confirmed, with no fixed date — so a mid-programme switch to funded status is possible | Not guaranteed. Students without a funding source are classified as fee-paying |
| Master in Applied AI (MAAI) | Fee-based only | Not applicable — explicitly not eligible for University or faculty-sponsored funding | None. Total tuition is AED 170,000 for the programme, paid in instalments each semester |
Available Programmes
MBZUAI lists the following Master’s programmes for the current cycle:
- Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence — listed as a unified programme, and separately as three named options with optional concentrations in Computer Vision, Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing. On the application portal these appear as four distinct choices, so check which one you are selecting
- Master of Science in Computer Science
- Master of Science in Robotics
- Master of Science in Statistics and Data Science
- Master of Science in Computational Biology — a new department welcoming its inaugural M.Sc. and Ph.D. cohorts in 2026, with a separate, later deadline of 22 January 2027
- Master in Applied Artificial Intelligence — fee-based, no funding available, deadline 28 February 2027
Doctoral programmes are listed separately on the University’s doctoral programmes page. For the exact admissions criteria, learning outcomes and screening exam topics of any individual programme, MBZUAI directs applicants to that programme’s own page rather than publishing one combined set.
Benefits
| Benefit | Status |
| Tuition fees | Free for funded students |
| Monthly stipend | M.Sc. AED 37,500 (UAE nationals) · AED 15,500 (international). Ph.D. AED 43,500 (UAE nationals) · AED 17,500 (international) |
| Flights | One return airfare each year to the home country |
| Health insurance | Covered for the approved funding period |
| Visa and Emirates ID | University-sponsored UAE residence visa and Emirates ID, where eligible |
| Accommodation | Not listed in the published benefits |
| Duration of funding | The approved funding period, subject to academic standing and advisor match |
Two conditions attach to being funded, and both are easy to miss. Funded students are expected to maintain an in-person presence on campus throughout the funded period and to obtain approval before being away. And students who receive an external scholarship or fellowship must disclose it — external funding normally replaces the University stipend rather than being paid on top of it.
Eligibility Criteria
Two bars apply, and at MBZUAI the gap between them is unusually wide. Admission is decided by the admissions committee; funding is decided separately, and for M.Sc. applicants largely by whether a faculty member chooses to sponsor you.
Eligible for the programme
- A STEM degree from an accredited institution recognised by the UAE Ministry of Education — computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, mathematics, physics or another relevant science or engineering major
- Minimum CGPA 3.0 or 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, depending on the programme
- The screening exam, covering advanced mathematics and programming, plus machine learning and core computer science for Ph.D. applicants
- A technical interview, for the subset of applicants invited to one
- English proficiency, with valid proof submitted at the time of application
- Senior-level students may apply with a transcript, but must submit the complete degree certificate on admission, plus a Certificate of Recognition within the first semester if the degree was earned outside the UAE, or a degree attestation if it was earned inside it
Eligible for funding
- Ph.D. applicants — admission brings Year 1 central funding, then continuation depends on a confirmed faculty advisor match and satisfactory progress
- M.Sc. applicants — admission brings nothing automatically. You need a faculty-sponsored research or teaching assistantship, or an approved government scholarship if you are a UAE national
- Merit-based M.Sc. funding is considered during the admissions review, so a stronger academic profile improves your odds without guaranteeing anything
- MAAI applicants — not eligible for any University or faculty-sponsored funding
- No published threshold — MBZUAI publishes no score or GPA above which funding follows

How to Apply
Step 1: Choose Your Programme on Funding Grounds, Not Just Interest
Before anything else, decide which of the three routes you are entering. A Ph.D. carries Year 1 central funding. An M.Sc. is fee-paying unless funding is attached separately. The Master in Applied AI cannot be funded at all and costs AED 170,000. If funding is essential to you, that ordering is the most important fact on this page.
Step 2: Check Your Degree and CGPA Against the Requirement
You need a STEM degree — computer science, electrical or computer engineering, mathematics, physics or a comparable science or engineering major — from an institution recognised by the UAE Ministry of Education, with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 or 3.5 on a 4.0 scale depending on the programme. Check your own programme’s page for which threshold applies to it.
Step 3: Identify Faculty Whose Research Matches Yours
This is the step the old model did not require. Funding at MBZUAI now runs through faculty advisors, so read the research of specific faculty members in your area and make your statement of purpose and research statement speak to it. For an M.Sc. applicant this is the difference between a funded place and a fee-paying one.
Step 4: Line Up Your Referees Early
Ph.D. applicants need a minimum of three referee recommendations and M.Sc. applicants two. Approach them while you are still assembling documents rather than in the final week, because this is the element most often outside your control.
Step 5: Prepare Seriously for the Screening Exam
The exam covers advanced mathematics and programming, with machine learning and core computer science added for Ph.D. applicants. Topics and preparation resources sit on each programme’s page, and the Screening Exam Guide is available once you register on the portal. A score of 75% or above also waives the AED 200 fee.
Step 6: Submit One Application Before 15 December 2026
Only one application per admission cycle is accepted and multiple submissions are not processed, so there is no scattergun option here. MBZUAI also states plainly that admissions are highly competitive and that space in the incoming cohort is limited. Submit through the official portal before 15 December 2026 at 5 p.m. GST — or 22 January 2027 for Computational Biology, or 28 February 2027 for the Master in Applied AI.
Step 7: Pay the Fee, Then Confirm Your Funding in Writing
Pay the AED 200 fee after the screening exam unless you have earned the waiver, or your application will not be reviewed. Decisions arrive no later than 31 March 2027, and you have until 15 April 2027 at 5 p.m. GST to respond to an offer. Use that fortnight to establish in writing what funding is attached to it before you accept — particularly for an M.Sc., where the default position is that you pay. Write to admission@mbzuai.ac.ae about a submitted application, or student.recruitment@mbzuai.ac.ae about programmes and how to apply.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Is the MBZUAI scholarship still fully funded?
Not automatically, and not for everyone. MBZUAI now states that M.Sc. students are “fee-paying by default”, that merit-based funding only “may be available”, and that funding is “not guaranteed for all admitted students”. Ph.D. students are centrally funded in Year 1 while matching with a faculty advisor, with funding moving to that advisor by the start of Year 2. The Master in Applied AI is not eligible for funding at all. Students who are funded receive free tuition, a stipend, one annual return flight, health insurance and a sponsored UAE visa — accommodation is not on that list.
2. What is the MBZUAI application deadline for 2027?
15 December 2026 at 5 p.m. GST for all graduate programmes except two. M.Sc. and Ph.D. Computational Biology close on 22 January 2027, and the Master in Applied Artificial Intelligence on 28 February 2027. The portal opened on 7 September 2026, or 30 September 2026 for Computational Biology. Only one application per admission cycle is accepted.
3. Who is eligible for MBZUAI funding?
You need a STEM degree — computer science, electrical or computer engineering, mathematics, physics or a comparable science or engineering major — from an institution recognised by the UAE Ministry of Education, with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 or 3.5 on a 4.0 scale depending on the programme. There is no published nationality restriction, so applicants from Pakistan, India, Nigeria and elsewhere are assessed on the same criteria. But eligibility for admission is not eligibility for funding: for an M.Sc. you additionally need a faculty-sponsored assistantship, or a government scholarship if you are a UAE national.
4. How do I apply for an MBZUAI scholarship?
There is no separate scholarship form — you apply for admission through the MBZUAI portal, sit the screening exam, pay the AED 200 fee, and funding is determined alongside or after the admission decision. Ph.D. applicants submit three referee recommendations and a research statement; M.Sc. applicants submit two referees. English proficiency evidence must be included at the time of application, not later.
5. Can I lose MBZUAI funding after I start?
Yes, and this is the condition that catches people. Ph.D. funding is central only for Year 1, and it continues beyond that only if you have a confirmed faculty advisor match by the end of Year 1 — the University describes the guarantee as “subject to a confirmed advisor match and satisfactory progress”. Funded students must also maintain an in-person presence on campus and get approval before being away. And if you win an external scholarship, it normally replaces the MBZUAI stipend rather than being added to it.
6. How much is the MBZUAI stipend?
MBZUAI publishes four figures, presented as the monthly stipend for funded students:
M.Sc. — AED 37,500 for UAE nationals, AED 15,500 for international students.
Ph.D. — AED 43,500 for UAE nationals, AED 17,500 for international students.
Two cautions. The table’s Ph.D. column is hidden on mobile screens, which is why many third-party pages quote only the M.Sc. figures and apply them to doctoral applicants. And the table itself carries no period label beyond the “monthly stipend” benefit it sits under, so if you are building a two-year budget around it, confirm the period in writing with admission@mbzuai.ac.ae. The Fall 2027 cost of attendance for unfunded M.Sc. students is not yet published — the University states it is being finalised.
7. Does MBZUAI require IELTS or TOEFL?
MBZUAI requires valid proof of English language proficiency, meeting its admission criteria and submitted at the time of application rather than after admission. However, the accepted tests and minimum scores are not published on the graduate admissions pages — the University directs applicants to each programme’s own page and to the application portal. Do not rely on the IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90 figures quoted on third-party sites; confirm the requirement for your specific programme before booking a test.
8. Is the Master in Applied AI covered by the scholarship?
No. MBZUAI states that the Master in Applied Artificial Intelligence (MAAI) is a fee-based programme and is not eligible for University or faculty-sponsored funding. Tuition is AED 5,000 per credit across 34 credit hours, which comes to AED 170,000 in total for the programme — roughly USD 46,291 — paid in instalments each semester rather than in one sum. If you are searching for an MBZUAI scholarship, this is the one programme where no amount of academic strength produces funding.
9. Is there an application fee, and can it be waived?
Yes — AED 200, payable after you complete the screening exam. An application with an unpaid fee is treated as incomplete and does not proceed to review. The fee is waived if your overall screening exam score is 75% or above, and reimbursed if you go on to enrol. There is no needs-based waiver published beyond those two routes.
Final Thoughts
The MBZUAI scholarship is still worth applying for, but not for the reason most pages give. The automatic full ride for every admitted student is gone, replaced by a model built around faculty advisors — and the honest summary is that the Ph.D. is funded, the M.Sc. might be, and the Master in Applied AI is not.
That makes one piece of preparation unusually valuable. Because funding now flows through advisors, reading the actual research of specific MBZUAI faculty and writing a statement that speaks to it is no longer polish — it is the mechanism by which you get paid. An M.Sc. applicant who does this well may be funded; one who writes a generic statement about a passion for AI will likely be admitted as fee-paying, if at all.
Two practical warnings before you go. Do not assume accommodation is included, because it is not in the published list of benefits. And check which stipend figure applies to you — the Ph.D. amounts sit in a table column that is hidden on mobile, so the numbers quoted on most other pages are the M.Sc. ones. Submit before 15 December 2026 at 5 p.m. GST, remember you get only one application per cycle, and if an offer arrives you have until 15 April 2027 to respond — use that window to get the funding attached to it confirmed in writing before you accept. Verify everything at mbzuai.ac.ae.
