The Bocconi Merit Scholarship is not something you apply for. After reading Bocconi University’s own published regulations and its 2027-28 admissions timeline directly, we confirmed the two facts that decide most outcomes: the award is granted on the strength of your admission application alone — the regulations state plainly that “a separate application will not be required” — and Bocconi itself warns that “the majority of scholarships are more likely to be allocated in the earlier rounds.” For the 2027-28 academic year, Round I closes on 29 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Italian time, and it is the round carrying the largest share of awards.
The award is a 100 per cent waiver on Bocconi’s ordinary academic tuition and fees for first-year Master of Science students. It is not a living stipend, and Milan is not a cheap city — that distinction matters more than anything else on this page.

Detail Description
Bocconi University is a university in Milan whose degree programmes concentrate on economics, management, finance, data science, law and public policy. Its Master of Science programmes are taught in English and run over two years, and for the 2027-28 academic year it lists programmes spanning International Management, Finance, Marketing Management, Accounting and Financial Management, Data Science and Business Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, Politics and Policy Analysis, and a Master of Arts in Global Law, among others.
What matters for funding is how Bocconi has structured its financial aid. The University describes its system as “based on both merit and need,” and in practice most of its waivers sit on the need side — assessed against a family’s documented economic and asset position. The Graduate Merit Award is the exception: it looks at your academic record and your dossier, asks nothing about your family’s finances, and requires no application of its own.
A 100 per cent waiver of Bocconi’s ordinary academic tuition and fees is therefore a substantial award. It is also, on its own, not enough to live in Milan — check the current fee schedule and your own cost-of-living estimate on Bocconi’s fees pages before treating the waiver as a complete answer.
Which Bocconi Award Are You Actually Looking For?
Searches for “Bocconi merit scholarship” land on three quite different things. Only the first is a merit award in the ordinary sense, and picking the wrong one costs you either an application you did not need to make or one you failed to make.
| Award | Who It Is For | Assessed On | Benefit | Separate Application |
| Bocconi Graduate Merit Award | First-year MSc and MA students | Merit only — academic record plus dossier | 100% of Bocconi tuition and fees | No |
| Bocconi4Access to Education waivers | First-year Bachelor and Law students | Family economic and asset situation, with merit for renewal | 100%, 80%, 60%, 40% or 20% tuition waiver depending on assessed need | Yes — a single financial application with documentation |
| Cyber Partnership Scholarship | Students admitted to the MSc in Cyber Risk Strategy and Governance, joint with Politecnico di Milano | Same basis as the Graduate Merit Award | Equivalent to the Graduate Merit Award | No |
Benefits
| Item | Covered |
| Bocconi ordinary academic tuition and fees | 100% |
| Partner university tuition on a Double or Joint Degree | Not covered |
| Living stipend | Not included |
| Accommodation | Not included in the standard award. Some variants have historically included free accommodation, which the revocation clause references |
| Flights or travel | Not included |
| Health insurance | Not included |
| Duration | Renewable for the full legal duration of the regular course, subject to credits |
| Repayment | None, unless the award is revoked for false declarations |
| Conversion to a named scholarship | Possible — the award may be converted into a donor-named scholarship |
There is one administrative condition attached to acceptance that is worth knowing in advance. Awardees complete an online acceptance procedure within the enrolment deadline and upload an updated CV, which Bocconi states may be shared with its Fundraising unit so that donors can be put in contact. The award may be converted into a named scholarship, and recipients may be contacted by donors or fundraising staff about it and about related academic and extra-academic activities. None of that is onerous, but it is a condition of the award rather than an optional extra.
Eligibility Criteria
Two separate bars apply here, and they are assessed by two different bodies. The Admissions Office decides whether you may study at Bocconi; a Committee appointed by the Rector decides whether you are funded. Meeting the first does not imply the second.
Eligible for the programme
- A valid bachelor qualification that meets Bocconi’s requirements for your chosen MSc or MA
- A selection test — GMAT, GRE or the online Bocconi test. The PPA and GLOBE programmes do not require one. Where you hold several scores, the system takes the most competitive
- An undergraduate GPA, converted into Bocconi’s grading scale. No minimum score is published, and the Admissions Office may recalculate your GPA from your transcript
- A dossier and motivation submitted in English, evaluated by the Director of the Master of Science programme. An English video presentation is optional
- No English certificate for selection — but B2 CEFR proof must be supplied to enrol, by the enrolment deadline and no later than 30 June 2027, or enrolment is cancelled. Five programmes require C1 by 23 July 2027
Eligible for the Merit Award
- Enrolling in the first year of an MSc or MA programme — the award is for first-year students, not continuing ones
- Among the top applicants — Bocconi considers academic profiles “amongst the top applicants” in each category and publishes no threshold score, GPA cut-off or award count
- Assessed primarily on academic achievement, with the complete admission dossier also evaluated
- Within your applicant category — International, Italian and Bocconi candidates are allocated awards separately
- No nationality restriction — Bocconi publishes no eligible-country list for this award
- No competing Bocconi benefit — accepting an equal or larger Bocconi benefit for the same year revokes the Merit Award, permanently
The Four Selection Rounds — and Why the First One Matters Most
These are the 2027-28 selection rounds for international candidates. Each closes at 11:59 p.m. Italian time on the date shown.
| Round | Application Period | Results and Enrolment Opens | Status |
| Round I | 1 October – 29 October 2026 | 17 December 2026 | Open — largest share of scholarships |
| Round II | 30 October 2026 – 26 January 2027 | 4 March 2027 | Opens 30 October 2026 |
| Round III | 27 January – 11 March 2027 | 13 April 2027 | Opens 27 January 2027 |
| Round IV | 12 March – 29 April 2027 | 10 June 2027 | Opens 12 March 2027 |
The enrolment period after each result normally lasts two to three weeks. Within a single application you may list up to five programmes, though several special programmes must be entered as separate choices and a few — the Global Experience tracks, the LSE-Bocconi and Sciences Po-Bocconi Double Degrees, and GLOBE — run their own selection procedures.
The Rules on Applying Twice
- You cannot have two applications open at once. You must wait for the outcome of one before submitting another
- Two applications per academic year is the maximum. Any further ones are not evaluated
- A second application must be improved — at least one element of your profile must be updated, such as a higher test score, revised programme choices or updated academic records
- An offer ends your year. Candidates who have received an offer of admission cannot reapply in the same academic year, whether or not they accept it
How Selection Works
Admission and funding are decided by different people against different standards, and the award is settled before you ever see it mentioned.
For admission, international applications are evaluated on three compulsory elements, and Bocconi states that an application will not be evaluated at all if any of them is missing: a GMAT, GRE or online Bocconi test result; the grade point average of exams passed in your undergraduate programme; and the evaluation of your dossier and motivation by the programme Director.
For the Merit Award, selection is carried out by a Committee nominated by the Rector that includes the Dean of the Graduate School and the Dean for International Affairs. The evaluation is based primarily on academic achievement, with the complete dossier submitted to the Admissions Office also taken into account. There is no interview for the award, no separate essay and no referee stage beyond what the admission application already requires.
Decisions arrive together with your admission result. You will not receive a separate scholarship notification on a separate date, and there is no published appeal route — the regulations describe the Committee’s decisions on numbers, amounts and recipients as final and unquestionable.
Required Documents
There is no scholarship document set. These are the documents for the admission application, which is the only thing you submit.
- Your bachelor qualification — transcripts and evidence of a valid degree, or of study in progress
- A test result — GMAT, GRE or the online Bocconi test, except for PPA and GLOBE. Multiple scores may be uploaded and the best is used
- Your undergraduate GPA, converted into Bocconi’s grading system within the application
- A dossier and motivation in English, covering your profile, experience and knowledge
- An optional video presentation in English, recorded inside the application, answering set questions on self-presentation and international outlook
- English language proof at B2 — not for selection, but required to enrol by 30 June 2027. A certificate, a degree taught in English, or a B2-or-higher university English exam all qualify
After an award is granted, acceptance additionally requires the online scholarship acceptance procedure and an updated CV, completed within the enrolment deadline.
Renewal — Keeping the Award
The Merit Award renews automatically for the entire legal duration of the regular course of study, provided two conditions are met.
- Enrolment on time — you complete enrolment in each academic year within the deadlines set by Academic Services
- Credits — you earn at least 50 credits by the published September cut-off before your second year. In the a.y. 2026-27 regulations this is set as 10 September 2027 for students who began in 2026-27; the equivalent date for a 2027-28 start falls in September 2028 and has not yet been published
Three details decide whether that threshold is actually met. Bonus credits do not count towards the Merit Award requirement. It is the student’s own responsibility to enrol and to verify at the Punto Blu that completed credits have been correctly registered by the deadline. And the award cannot be renewed for fuori corso years — time spent beyond the regular duration of the course is not covered.
Revocation — How People Lose It
The regulations list the circumstances in which the award is withdrawn. Several of them catch people who have already won it.
| Situation | Consequence |
| Changing programme, even within the same round | The award is not retained, in any case |
| Declining your round and being admitted again later for the same programme | The award is not retained, unless a new one is explicitly granted for the new round |
| Admitted to two different programmes in two different rounds, both with awards | You may choose one programme and its award, if all deadlines are respected |
| Accepting an equal or larger Bocconi benefit for the same year | Revoked. If you later lose the larger benefit, the Merit Award can never be reinstated |
| Failing to lift the reserve on first-year enrolment by the published final deadline | Revoked, with full ordinary tuition and fees payable |
| Official GMAT score arrives lower than the one used in selection | Bocconi states that admission and/or scholarship awards may be revoked. The Admissions Office may verify test scores at any stage, including after enrolment |
| False declarations found by the Fees, Funding and Housing Office | Revoked from the point of the conduct, with full repayment of waived tuition and fees under Italian D.P.R. 445/2000 |
| Disciplinary sanction imposed by the University | Revoked from the day the sanction is imposed |
| Withdrawing from studies or transferring to another university mid-year | Benefit forfeited, with no refund of the first instalment advance paid |
The first two rows are the ones worth reading twice. The award is attached to a specific programme in a specific round, so a change of mind about which MSc you want is also a decision to give up the funding.
How to Apply
Step 1: Confirm You Are Applying at Graduate Level
The Merit Award is for first-year Master of Science and MA students. If you are applying for a Bachelor’s or Law programme, stop here and go to the Bocconi4Access to Education application instead — that route is need-assessed and genuinely requires a separate submission with financial documentation, and nothing happens automatically.
Step 2: Book Your Test Before You Do Anything Else
A GMAT, GRE or online Bocconi test result is one of three elements without which your application is not evaluated at all. PPA and GLOBE applicants are exempt. Scores take time to arrive, and the whole strategy on this page depends on making an early round, so this is the item to start with rather than finish with.
Step 3: Decide Your Programme Choices Carefully
You may list up to five programmes in one application, but the award attaches to the programme you are admitted to, and changing programme later forfeits it. Check which of your choices run separate selection procedures — the Global Experience tracks, the LSE-Bocconi and Sciences Po-Bocconi Double Degrees, and GLOBE all do. If you are considering a Double or Joint Degree, remember the waiver covers Bocconi’s fees only.
Step 4: Write the Dossier and Motivation in English
This is evaluated by the programme Director for admission and read again by the Merit Award Committee alongside your academic record. It is the only part of the process where you can argue for yourself, since there is no scholarship essay and no interview. The optional video presentation is a genuine extra opportunity if your degree is from a university Bocconi sees less often.
Step 5: Submit in Round I if You Possibly Can
Round I for 2027-28 closes on 29 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Italian time, with results on 17 December 2026. Bocconi states that most scholarships go to the earliest rounds. If your test score and transcripts are in hand, submitting in Round I is worth more to your funding chances than another fortnight of editing.
Step 6: Do Not Open a Second Application Carelessly
You cannot have two applications open at once, you get a maximum of two in an academic year, and a second one must contain a genuinely improved element. If you receive an offer, your year is finished — you cannot reapply for a better programme or a better round.
Step 7: Accept Promptly and Watch the Enrolment Reserve
An award arrives with your admission result. Complete the online acceptance and upload an updated CV within the enrolment deadline. If your enrolment is conditional, lift the reserve by the published final deadline — failing to do so revokes the award and leaves the full ordinary tuition payable.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Is the Bocconi Merit Scholarship fully funded?
No. The Bocconi Graduate Merit Award is a 100 per cent waiver on Bocconi’s ordinary academic tuition and fees and nothing more. There is no living stipend, no accommodation, no flights and no health insurance in the standard award, and on a Double or Joint Degree it does not cover the partner university’s fees at all. Since Milan is one of Italy’s most expensive cities, you still need a funded plan for two years of living costs. It is a very large discount on the biggest line in your budget rather than a fully funded place.
2. When should I apply for the Bocconi Merit Scholarship 2027?
As early as you can, and the date that matters is 29 October 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Italian time — the close of Round I for the 2027-28 academic year. There are four rounds, running to 29 April 2027, but Bocconi states that the majority of scholarships are allocated in the earlier rounds for each applicant category. There is no separate scholarship deadline to track, because the admission deadline is the scholarship deadline.
3. Who is eligible for the Bocconi Merit Scholarship?
Candidates enrolling in the first year of a Master of Science or MA programme at Bocconi, assessed within their applicant category — International, Italian or Bocconi. There is no eligible-country list and no nationality restriction published, so applicants from Pakistan, India, Nigeria and elsewhere are considered on the same basis as everyone else. For the award itself Bocconi publishes no GPA cut-off and no award quantity — only that it considers profiles “amongst the top applicants,” judged primarily on academic achievement plus the full dossier. Admission is separate and does carry published minimums: GMAT 500, GMAT Focus Edition 485, or a qualifying GRE Verbal and Quantitative combination.
4. How do I apply for the Bocconi Merit Scholarship?
You do not. The regulations state that a separate application will not be required — you apply for admission to an MSc or MA programme, and the Merit Award Committee assesses you from that same application. The result is communicated together with your admission decision. If you are awarded, you then complete an online acceptance procedure and upload an updated CV within the enrolment deadline.
5. Can I lose the award by changing my programme or my round?
Yes, and this is the rule that catches people who have already won. The award is tied to the specific programme and admission round in which it was granted. Changing programme forfeits it in any case, even within the same round. Declining your round and being readmitted later to the same programme also forfeits it, unless a new award is explicitly granted for the new round. The one exception: if you are admitted to two different programmes in two different rounds and both carry an award, you may choose between them, provided every deadline is respected.
6. Is GMAT or GRE required for Bocconi?
Yes, for most programmes. A GMAT, GRE or the online Bocconi test is one of three compulsory elements, and Bocconi states that applications missing any of the three will not be evaluated. The PPA and GLOBE programmes do not require a selection test. If you hold several scores you can upload them all and the system automatically uses the most competitive one.
7. Is IELTS required for the Bocconi Merit Scholarship?
Not to apply, and not to win the award. Bocconi states that English certifications are not mandatory for applying or for the selection process — they become compulsory only on admission, to complete enrolment. The standard is B2 on the CEFR scale, and IELTS Academic 6.5 with at least 6 in every section meets it, as does TOEFL iBT 88, Duolingo 110, CAE 173, CPE 180, or BEC Vantage and FCE at Grade B or 173. You can also satisfy it without a test — through a university qualification or secondary diploma awarded in English, or a B2-or-higher English exam passed in a university course. Nationals of majority English-speaking countries are automatically assumed to meet it.
Two dates matter. Proof must reach Bocconi by the enrolment deadline and no later than 30 June 2027, and Bocconi states that failing to supply it results in cancellation of enrolment. Five programmes require C1 rather than B2, due by 23 July 2027: IM Global Experience, Finance Global Experience, IM CEMS MIM, the IM Asia Bocconi–ESSEC Double Degree, and the IM Concentration – DD ESSEC Luxury Management. Italian is not required for any MSc programme.
8. Do bachelor’s applicants get a Bocconi merit scholarship?
Not an automatic one. Bocconi’s tuition waivers for first-year Bachelor and Law students — at 100%, 80%, 60%, 40% and 20% — sit under the Bocconi4Access to Education scheme and are assessed on the economic and asset situation of the student’s household, not on merit alone. They require a single financial application with supporting documentation, and the University considers each application for the largest benefit downwards until resources are exhausted. An undergraduate who waits to be assessed automatically receives nothing.
9. How do I keep the Bocconi Merit Award after the first year?
Enrol on time each year and earn at least 50 credits by the published September cut-off before your second year. The a.y. 2026-27 regulations set that date as 10 September 2027 for students who started in 2026-27, so a 2027-28 starter should expect an equivalent date in September 2028 — Bocconi has not published it yet. Three conditions trip people up: bonus credits do not count, it is your own responsibility to check at the Punto Blu that credits have been registered before the deadline, and the award cannot be renewed for fuori corso years beyond the regular course duration. If the merit requirement is missed the award is revoked, and Bocconi states that once revoked it cannot be restored.
Final Thoughts
The Bocconi Merit Scholarship is one of the few significant awards where the application you are already making is the whole application. There is no scholarship form, no separate essay, no referee to chase and no second deadline. Submit a strong Master of Science application and the Committee assesses you from it, with the answer arriving alongside your admission result.
That simplicity hides where the real decision sits. Bocconi says in two separate places that most scholarships go to the earliest rounds — and because you get a maximum of two applications in a year, and an offer of admission ends your eligibility to reapply, the cost of waiting is not a delay but a smaller pool of funding. Round I for 2027-28 closes on 29 October 2026. If your test score and transcripts are ready, that is the round to be in.
Be clear-eyed about two other things. This is a tuition waiver, not a fully funded place, and two years of Milan rent is a real number you need an answer for. And the award is bolted to one programme in one round: deciding later that you would rather do a different MSc means giving up the funding you won. Confirm every figure at unibocconi.it, and note that the regulations published there cover a.y. 2026-27 — the 2027-28 version had not been released when this page was last checked.
