The Melbourne International Scholarship awards at the University of Melbourne work differently from almost every other scholarship covered on this site, and the difference is worth understanding before you read any further: there is no scholarship application. You apply for a course, and you are automatically assessed. After checking the official University of Melbourne scholarships database, we confirmed that both undergraduate awards carrying the Melbourne International name are marked “Open for automatic consideration” with no application form at any stage.
That makes the course application deadline the only deadline that matters. For Semester 1 of 2027 it is 30 November 2026, and missing it does not merely delay your scholarship — it removes you from consideration entirely, because there is no separate route to apply.

Detail Description
The University of Melbourne describes itself as Australia’s number one ranked university, and it is certainly among the leading research institutions in the Asia-Pacific. Its main campus sits in Parkville, immediately north of Melbourne’s central business district, and it teaches across twelve broad study areas — from agricultural and veterinary sciences through engineering, law and medicine to music and the performing arts.
For international students the practical picture is straightforward. Melbourne offers fee-paying places rather than subsidised ones, so tuition is substantial, and the university’s response is a large volume of partial fee remissions rather than a small number of full rides at undergraduate level. The two Melbourne International awards together will provide at least 365 fee remissions from 2027 — a far higher chance of receiving something than a prestige scholarship offers, but something smaller when you receive it.
The Three Automatic Scholarships
Three separate awards at Melbourne require no application. Two are undergraduate and carry the Melbourne International name; the third is the graduate research award, and it is by far the most generous.
| Scholarship | Level | Benefit | Who Can Get It | Selected On |
| Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship | Bachelor’s | 20% fee remission for the course duration | Citizens of the 106 eligible countries only | Final secondary school or foundation studies results |
| Melbourne International Excellence Scholarship | Bachelor’s | 20% fee remission for the course duration | All international students — no country restriction | Course entry score |
| Melbourne Research Scholarship | Graduate research | 100% fee remission plus up to AUD 138,000, including a fortnightly stipend at AUD 41,100 per year, OSHC single membership and an AUD 3,000 relocation allowance. 350 awards | Domestic and international students, whether applying or already enrolled | Academic results for previous study and research potential, ranked by selection panels |
What Changed for 2027
Two things, and both matter. The Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship was worth 25 per cent for awards made before 2027; from 2027 it drops to 20 per cent, but the number of scholarships rises to 225. At the same time the Melbourne International Excellence Scholarship is new, available only for students commencing from 2027 onwards, with at least 140 awards.
The net effect is that the individual award is smaller but your odds of getting one are considerably better — and because the Excellence award has no country restriction, applicants from countries outside the eligible list now have an automatic route for the first time.
You Can Only Hold One
Both undergraduate awards state that the scholarship cannot be held alongside another scholarship or sponsorship that provides a fee sponsorship or discount. In practice this means you will receive one of the two Melbourne International awards, not both, and you cannot stack either on top of an external fee-based sponsorship.

Eligible Countries
The country restriction applies to the Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship only. The Excellence Scholarship and the Research Scholarship have no country list.
Melbourne defines eligible countries as those with a nominal Gross Domestic Product per capita of US$10,000 or less according to World Bank data, and publishes a list of 106 countries. The university states the list is updated regularly, so confirm your own country before relying on it.

Eligibility Criteria
Two different bars apply here, and conflating them is the most common mistake applicants make. The University decides whether you may study; the scholarship conditions decide whether you are funded. The second bar is the narrower one.
Eligible for the course
- Set by your course page — the entry score, subject prerequisites and English requirement for that specific degree
- Prior tertiary study is no barrier — Melbourne admits applicants who already hold or have begun a degree
- Open to international applicants generally — an Overseas Fee place carries no nationality restriction
Eligible for the scholarship
- No previous tertiary study — this excludes a large group of people the course itself would happily admit
- A course offer already in hand — the award follows the offer rather than preceding it
- Nationality matters for one award only — the Undergraduate Scholarship is limited to 106 countries; the Excellence Scholarship is not
- No competing fee sponsorship — another award providing a fee discount rules this one out
The per-award conditions below set out the detail.
Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship
- Citizenship — you must be a citizen of a country on the eligible countries list, defined by a GDP per capita of US$10,000 or less
- Course offer — you must have received an offer for an Overseas Fee place in a bachelor’s degree, for commencement in the year the scholarship is offered
- No previous tertiary study — you must not have previously undertaken tertiary studies. Extension studies completed as part of a year 12 programme are the only exception
- No competing fee sponsorship — the award cannot be held with another scholarship or sponsorship providing a fee sponsorship or discount
Melbourne International Excellence Scholarship
- Course offer — you must have received an offer for an Overseas Fee place in a bachelor’s degree for commencement in 2027. This award is available only for students commencing from 2027 onwards
- No previous tertiary study — the same restriction applies, with the same year 12 extension studies exception
- No country restriction — open to international students of any nationality
- No competing fee sponsorship — the same condition applies
Melbourne Research Scholarship
- Study level — you must be enrolling in a graduate research degree, meaning a Masters by Research or a doctoral programme
- Student type — both domestic and international students are eligible
- Study stage — you must either have applied for and met the entry requirements for a graduate research degree, or already be enrolled in one at Melbourne. Unlike the undergraduate awards, this one is open to current students as well as future ones
- Course application — you must have submitted a graduate research course application by that course’s closing date. Confirmation of automatic consideration arrives within seven days of submitting
- Already enrolled or deferred — if you have deferred your commencement or are currently enrolled and want to be reconsidered, the process varies by enrolling Faculty rather than being automatic
The award comes in three forms. The Fee Offset covers fees only. The Stipend version adds the fortnightly living allowance, the relocation allowance and OSHC. The third combines both. The stipend may be indexed annually and includes limited paid sick, parental and partner leave. Domestic research students receive a Research Training Program Scholarship (Fee Offset) with their course offer, while offers that include a stipend are made separately but at around the same time.
Selection is made by faculty panels on academic results and research potential. Melbourne states that completion of a degree at the same level as the research course you are applying for, relevant professional experience, refereed publications, specialist medical qualifications or composition of original music may also be taken into consideration.
English Language Requirements
There is no separate English requirement for the scholarships — you simply have to meet the entry requirement for your course, because the scholarship follows the course offer. Requirements vary by degree, and the table below gives the standard level that applies to the Bachelor of Agriculture, Arts, Biomedicine, Commerce, Design, Fine Arts, Music and Science.
| Test | Minimum Score |
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 overall, with writing 6.0, speaking 6.0, reading 6.0, listening 6.0 |
| TOEFL iBT | 81, with writing 19, speaking 19, reading 16, listening 16 |
| PTE Academic | 64, with writing 60, speaking 60, reading 60, listening 60 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced | 169, with writing 170, speaking 179, reading 163, listening 163 |
| LanguageCert Academic | 67, with writing 64, speaking 70, reading 60, listening 57 |
| Michigan English Test (MET) | 58, with writing 57, speaking 48, reading 55, listening 56 |
Courses such as the Bachelor of Oral Health sit at a higher level, so check the requirement published on your own course page rather than assuming the figures above apply. You may also satisfy the requirement without a test — through citizenship or long-term residency in a recognised English-speaking country combined with education conducted entirely in English, through an approved secondary school English subject, or by completing an accepted foundation programme.

Applicants holding an Australian Year 12 qualification, or an International Baccalaureate Diploma completed in Australia or New Zealand, apply through VTAC for the Semester 1 intake rather than directly to the university. For the Semester 1, 2027 intake the VTAC system opened in early August 2026, VTAC’s timely application deadline fell in late September 2026, and offers are released in rounds between December 2026 and February 2027. If you are a VTAC applicant, the timely deadline for Semester 1, 2027 has already passed — VTAC operates its own late-application rules and fees, so check vtac.edu.au directly rather than assuming the University’s 30 November 2026 date applies to you. Everyone else — including applicants with an overseas secondary qualification, an IB completed outside Australia and New Zealand, or a foundation studies programme — applies direct to the University of Melbourne for both intakes.
Required Documents
These are the documents for the course application, since that is the only application you submit.
- Secondary school results — your final results, or evidence of results in progress. Scholarship selection is based on final results, not predicted results
- Foundation studies results — if you are applying on the basis of a foundation programme
- English language evidence — a test result, or evidence that you qualify through one of the exemption pathways
- Passport — a valid passport establishing your citizenship, which also determines your eligibility for the country-restricted award
- Subject prerequisite evidence — proof you have met the prerequisites published on your course page
- Genuine Student requirement information — the Department of Home Affairs requirement for a student visa. The University may request further information to assess this
How Winners Are Selected
The two undergraduate awards are decided on different measures, which is worth knowing because it changes what you can influence.
The Melbourne International Undergraduate Scholarship goes to the students ranked highest on their final secondary school or foundation studies results. Melbourne is explicit that selection is not based on predicted results, and that the selection scores are reviewed annually and may vary between years. There is no published cut-off to aim at.
The Melbourne International Excellence Scholarship goes to the students ranked highest on their course entry score — the score your qualification converts to for the specific degree you applied for. Because entry scores differ sharply between courses, the competitive threshold depends on which degree you choose.
In both cases there is no interview, no essay and no referee. The decision is made on academic results alone, and it is made quickly: successful candidates hear within five working days of receiving their course offer. Melbourne states plainly that unsuccessful candidates are not notified, so silence is the answer.
How to Apply
Step 1: Confirm You Have Not Studied at Tertiary Level
Start here, because it is the condition that rules people out. Neither Melbourne International award accepts applicants who have previously undertaken tertiary studies, with only year 12 extension studies excepted. If you have begun a degree elsewhere, the undergraduate route is closed and the Melbourne Research Scholarship is the award to target instead.
Step 2: Choose Your Course and Check Its Entry Score
The Excellence Scholarship is ranked on your course entry score, so the degree you pick directly affects how competitive you are. Read the entry requirements, subject prerequisites and English level on the course page itself rather than relying on general figures, since requirements vary between degrees.
Step 3: Work Out Whether You Apply Direct or Through VTAC
If you hold an Australian Year 12 qualification, or an IB Diploma completed in Australia or New Zealand, you apply through VTAC for the Semester 1 intake. If you hold an overseas secondary qualification, an IB completed outside Australia and New Zealand, or a foundation studies programme, you apply direct to the University for both intakes. Also check whether your country requires you to apply through an authorised education agent.
Step 4: Sit Your English Test With Reporting Time to Spare
For most bachelor degrees the requirement is IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 81. Results take weeks to report, so book early enough that the score reaches Melbourne before the course deadline. Check whether you qualify for one of the exemption pathways first — you may not need a test at all.
Step 5: Submit Your Course Application Before 30 November 2026
Apply through the University’s online application portal for Semester 1 of 2027. You will receive a confirmation email with a student ID and application reference number, and you can track progress in the portal. This submission is what enters you for the scholarships — there is nothing further to complete.
Step 6: Respond Quickly to Any Request for Additional Information
If Melbourne asks for further documents, it sets a date for them. Supplying them promptly is what keeps your application in the assessment round for your chosen intake. Conditional offers are common if you are still completing your studies, and you must meet the conditions before accepting.
Step 7: Watch for the Outcome Within Five Working Days of Your Offer
Once your course offer arrives, a scholarship outcome follows within five working days if you were successful. If nothing arrives, you were not selected — Melbourne does not notify unsuccessful candidates. If you were successful and cannot start that year, both undergraduate awards can be deferred to the following academic year.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Is the Melbourne International Scholarship fully funded?
No. Both Melbourne International undergraduate awards provide a 20 per cent tuition fee remission for the duration of your course, with no living stipend, no accommodation, no flights and no health cover. You pay the remaining 80 per cent of tuition plus all living costs. The fully funded option at this university is the Melbourne Research Scholarship for graduate research, which covers 100 per cent of fees plus a stipend of AUD 41,100 per year, OSHC single membership and an AUD 3,000 relocation allowance, up to a total value of AUD 138,000.
2. What is the application deadline for Melbourne International Scholarships 2027?
There is no scholarship deadline, because there is no scholarship application. The deadline that matters is the course application deadline: 30 November 2026 for the Semester 1, 2027 intake, and 31 May 2027 for the Semester 2, 2027 intake. Applicants going through VTAC follow the VTAC calendar instead: for Semester 1, 2027 it opened in early August 2026 and its timely deadline fell in late September 2026, which has now passed. Check vtac.edu.au for its late-application rules.
3. Which countries are eligible for Melbourne International Scholarships?
The country restriction applies to the Undergraduate Scholarship only, which is limited to citizens of 106 countries with a GDP per capita of US$10,000 or less. Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka are all on that list, alongside most of Sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and Latin America. If your country is not on it you lose nothing: you are still assessed automatically for the Excellence Scholarship, which carries the same 20 per cent benefit with no country restriction at all.
4. Is IELTS required for Melbourne International Scholarships?
Not by the scholarship itself — the scholarship follows your course offer, so you need to meet your course’s English requirement. For most bachelor degrees that is IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 81, or PTE Academic 64. Some courses require more. You may also be exempt through citizenship or long-term residency in a recognised English-speaking country with education conducted in English, an approved secondary school English subject, or an accepted foundation programme.
5. How to apply for Melbourne International Scholarships 2027?
Apply for a bachelor’s course, and you are assessed automatically. Submit your course application through the University of Melbourne’s online portal before 30 November 2026 for Semester 1 of 2027, or through VTAC if you hold an Australian Year 12 or an IB completed in Australia or New Zealand. There is no scholarship form, no essay and no referees. Successful candidates are notified within five working days of receiving a course offer.
6. Can I apply if I have already started a university degree?
No, not for either Melbourne International award. Both state that you must not have previously undertaken tertiary studies, with the single exception of extension studies completed as part of a year 12 programme. This is the condition that disqualifies the largest number of applicants. If you already hold or have begun a degree, look at the Melbourne Research Scholarship for graduate research study instead.
7. Can I hold a Melbourne International Scholarship alongside another scholarship?
No. Both undergraduate awards state that the scholarship cannot be held with another scholarship or sponsorship that provides a fee sponsorship or discount. You will also receive only one of the two Melbourne International awards rather than both. Scholarships that provide something other than a fee discount are not addressed in the published conditions, so confirm your specific case with the University.
8. What happens if I do not hear anything about the scholarship?
You were not selected. Melbourne states plainly that unsuccessful candidates are not notified, so silence is the answer rather than a delay. Successful candidates hear within five working days of receiving a course offer, which means that if your offer arrived more than a week ago and no scholarship email followed, the assessment is finished. There is no appeal, no waiting list and nothing to chase — but your course offer itself still stands, and you can reapply in a later intake if you defer and recommence.
9. What is the difference between the Undergraduate and the Excellence scholarship?
The benefit is identical at 20 per cent of fees. The differences are eligibility and selection. The Undergraduate Scholarship is restricted to citizens of 106 lower-income countries and ranks applicants on final secondary school or foundation studies results. The Excellence Scholarship is open to all international students regardless of nationality and ranks applicants on course entry score. You do not choose between them — you are assessed for whichever you qualify for.
Final Thoughts
The Melbourne International Scholarship awards are unusual in being almost impossible to miss through your own error. There is no form to fill in, no essay to labour over, no referee to chase and no scholarship deadline to track. Submit a course application to one of Australia’s top-ranked universities and the assessment happens on its own, with an answer inside five working days of your offer.
What you should be clear-eyed about is the size of the award. Twenty per cent off tuition on a fee-paying Australian degree is meaningful, but it is not a free education, and anyone planning a move to Melbourne on the strength of it needs a funding plan for the other eighty per cent plus living costs. The honest comparison is that these are volume awards with good odds, not prestige awards with life-changing value. If you want a fully funded place at this university, the graduate research route and its AUD 41,100 annual stipend is the one to aim at.
Two conditions decide most outcomes. You must not have previously undertaken tertiary study, and your final results rather than your predicted results are what get ranked. Beyond that, the only thing left in your control is timing — the Semester 1, 2027 course application closes on 30 November 2026, and because that is also the scholarship cut-off, a late course application is a missed scholarship. Confirm every figure at scholarships.unimelb.edu.au, which the University notes may change without notice.
